The RAID® Approach for Non-Suicidal Self-Injury is a 1-day course that applies the RAID® approach to this challenging condition by helping us analyse what benefit the client derives from it and helping them to achieve the same benefit in a greener way – a way that works better for them.
It is APT-accredited and gives you access to relevant downloadable resources for use post-course. The course is available for whole teams and can be attended face-to-face or online. It is intended for people who have already attended The RAID® course for working with difficult and disruptive behavior.
Deliberate non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is the intentional cause of harm to one's own body. More often, however, it is thought of as the coping with intense emotional distress by inflicting injury to oneself. It is more prevalent amongst young people, though by no means confined to them.
Non-suicidal self-injury is not attempted suicide, rather it is usually a way of coping with acute distress.
More than 24,000 teenagers are admitted to hospital in the UK annually after deliberately harming themselves; 1 in 10 teenagers self-harms. Rates of non-suicidal self-injury in the UK have increased over the last 10 years and are amongst the highest in Europe. Multiple adults are in secure facilities harm themselves in extreme ways sometimes being reckless as to the outcome of the harm they inflict.
Sometimes, non-suicidal self-injury is triggered by events such as: bereavement, loss of employment, imprisonment, relationship problems, and other crises, yet at other times, none of those are present, and the non-suicidal self-injury seems to be purely a very effective means of coping with distress from whatever source. Sometimes also it serves a different function. In any event, the key is to discover what function it serves and to help the person achieve that function in a better way for them.
This course sets out to give a clear and effective approach to achieve exactly that.
All professionals who sometimes see people who self harm, whether 1:1 or as part of a team. You should also have attended The RAID® Course for working with difficult and disruptive behavior.
You will be registered as having attended the course, and receive a certificate to this effect. This gives you access to online resources associated with the course and free access to the online exam if you wish to sit it.
