Motivational Interviewing,
and how to use it effectively.
Motivational Interviewing, and how to use it effectively is a 3-day course from the Association for Psychological Therapies (APT), a leading provider of accredited Motivational Interviewing training courses. The training is also approved by the American Psychological Association (APA).
Completion of the course results in 18 CE credits* and it is the only Motivational Interviewing training that is APT-accredited and also gives you access to APT’s relevant downloadable resources for use post-course. The course is available for teams and individuals and can be attended face-to-face or online. It can also be completed as part of The APT Diploma in Psychological Therapies.
Executive Summary:
Motivational Interviewing describes an organized way of helping people to recognize their problems and to do something about them. Principally it addresses behavior about which the client has mixed feelings: drinking and substance misuse for example, but a surprising array of common mental and physical health problems as well. Issues from taking psychoactive medication through to eating more healthily can all be addressed using motivational interviewing.
This course is based on the latest edition of Miller and Rollnick's book so covers the four broad components of skill, namely: Knowledge and Spirit, Engaging, Focusing and Evoking, and Planning and Integration. In addition it looks at the relationship between Motivational Interviewing and The Stages of Change (the work of DiClemente et al). And finally it covers how to develop your Motivational Interviewing skills and practise after the course.
Attend the course as an individual, or we can bring the 3-day course to your own organization and train a group of 6-15 people, or you or your colleagues may be able to be trained to roll out the course in your organization under license.
Who should attend?
This is an ‘introductory’ course to MI and people who attend normally fall into one of two categories:
1. Professionals who see patients in 1:1 treatment settings, have a significant degree of clinical skill, and wish to become proficient in motivational interviewing.
2. 'Whole teams' (either in inpatient or community settings) seeking to develop a unified level of proficiency in motivational interviewing.
The professional affiliations of people attending this course include: mental health/psychiatric nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, and others working in a variety of settings including: Substance Misuse, Forensic, Adult Mental Health, and Children & Adolescents.

- Definition and description of Motivational Interviewing.
- The underlying spirit of motivational interviewing.
- Reflective Listening and the client centred OARS skills.
- Identifying the goals the client wants to move towards.
- Exchanging information and providing advice.
- Generating change talk (where the client talks about changing) and responding to it in a way that develops and encourages it.
- Traps to avoid in early stages of therapy.
- Responding to sustain talk (where the client talks about sustaining the way they are right now) in a way that doesn't encourage it.
- Developing hope and confidence.
- Timing, and negotiating a plan of change.
- Strengthening commitment.
- Integrating motivational interviewing with other clinical approaches.
- The link between motivational interviewing (Miller and Rollnick) and the stages of change model (Prochaska et al).
- Developing your motivational interviewing skill and practise after the course.
Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this course, the learner will be able to:
- List the purpose, the principles, and the stages of the MI approach.
- Describe how MI fits with the “Stages of Change” theory.
- Apply Motivational Interviewing techniques to move people through the Stages of Change.
- Identify at which stage a person is at in the “Stages of Change” and how to meet them at that stage.
- Describe how to recognize and generate “change talk” in their patients.
- Identify “sustain talk” which may indicate a person’s ambivalence about changing.
- Identify signs that a person is showing readiness to change.
- Demonstrate how to establish “Decisional Balance” with a person to highlight the pros and cons of changing.
- Explain why it is important to boost a person’s self-efficacy.
- Discuss why it is important to strengthen a person’s commitment to their plan for change, and how.
What you receive as a result of attending the training:
You will be registered as having attended the course, thereby gaining APT's Level 1 accreditation, and receive a certificate to this effect. The accreditation gives you access to online resources associated with the course and access to the online exam if you wish to uprate your APT accreditation to Level 2.
Your registration lasts indefinitely, and your accreditation lasts for 3 years and is renewable by sitting an online refresher which also upgrades your accreditation to APT Level 2 if you are successful in the associated online exam.

Upon completion of this course you can apply for CE certification for an additional cost of $20 USD (for training purchased after 08/14/2023).
Requirements for completion: To be awarded CE credits for this course 100% attendance is required for live training. For the 'online anytime' (self-paced) version, you are required to complete the course in full and complete a multiple choice exam whereby a pass marks of 85% is required (failure on the third attempt would result in having to go back through the content again). A feedback survey is also required to be completed.
Note: there may be other professional licensing boards that accept CE credits earned from APA-approved sponsors. Because CE regulations vary by state and profession, we recommend that participants check with their state licensing board to inquire whether credits will be accepted for renewal of licensure. We do not have any authority over whether credits earned will be accepted, as this authority rests with the state licensing boards.
