'Counseling People in Crisis, by Phone or Zoom' is a 3-day course from the Association for Psychological Therapies (APT), a leading provider of training for professionals working in mental health and related areas throughout the USA.
It is APT-accredited and also gives you access to APT’s relevant downloadable resources for use post-course. The course is available for teams/organizations and can be attended face-to-face or online.
Executive Summary:
This is a three-day course with two clear aims:
1. To teach the principal crisis counseling skills and how they can be applied remotely, by phone, Zoom, Teams, etc.
2. To provide key, usable information on the three biggest crisis areas: psychosis; personality disorder; suicidality.
And to integrate those two skill-sets into a whole that can be taken away and used straight away by the delegates attending.
As the title suggests, the overall aim of this course is to give delegates as much useful information and skill as possible, that they can use when talking to people in crisis on the phone, Zoom, Teams, etc.

This is a course intended for teams of professionals who work with people who are in a crisis relating to their mental health.

Day One
- Key Crisis Skills 1:
- Asking good questions (open, closed, extreme);
- Mood-matching (why and how to do it);
- Validating (what it is, why and how).
- Understanding people in Crisis 1: Psychosis.
- End of day Quiz, in small groups.
Day Two
- Key Crisis Skills 2:
- The use of ‘scaling (out of 10) questions’;
- Helping the person to take action to respond to their situation better.
- Understanding People in Crisis 2: Personality Disorder: what it is, how to manage it, and how to help longer term.
- End of day Quiz, in small groups.
Day Three
- Key Crisis Skills 3:
- The importance of self-efficacy, and how to build it;
- Problem solving techniques both for the patient and the professional;
- Risk assessment and risk management.
- Understanding people in Crisis 3: Suicide. Predictors and management (prevention) measures. Things to say that will help long term.
- End of course Quiz, Registration and Feedback.
What this course will do for you:
1. You will have key information on the most important mental health problems encountered in crisis situations, and it will be information that is relevant to those situations.
2. You will know about and have a chance to practise the principal skills necessary in a crisis counseling situation, and be able to see how they can be used remotely, by phone or Zoom, Teams etc.
3. You will be able to integrate the knowledge and skill gained, with a view to applying it directly in your own work situation.
What you receive as a result of attending the training:
You will be registered as having attended the course, thereby gaining APT's Level 1 accreditation, and receive a certificate to this effect. The accreditation gives you access to online resources associated with the course and access to the online exam free of charge if you wish to uprate your APT accreditation to Level 2.
Your registration lasts indefinitely, and your accreditation lasts for 3 years and is renewable by sitting an online refresher which also upgrades your accreditation to APT Level 2 if you are successful in the associated online exam.
